Episode 274: a cap and a cone

9pm: an sms came from R: eh, they are closing down Clementi Macdonalds. by 9.20pm i was there….

a trip down memory lane

in kindergarten, i wore my red and white uniform with red bloomers. and i distinctly remember waiting with mummy to get my woodstock plush which came with a happy meal. i still eat happy meals, still have the woodstock plush, but now i queue instead of mummy.

in primary school, i wore my dalmatian uniform with tatty shoes. and i remember running to macdonalds during the 2 hour lunch break of chinese remedial camp (sigh, a trend to be repeated even in sec sch and jc) and get a cheeseburger, just because it was cool to be able to sneak out of school.

in secondary school, i wore my nurses uniform with black shoes masquerading as white ones (the power of chalk!). and i remember boycotting clementi macs for JE long john silvers. where i hung out with AGGM and we plotted our weekly revenge on the MOBs and planned when to drink ribena.

in JC, i wore the uniform that gives me staff discount at factories. and i transplanted my mac allegiance to KAP, just for sheer proximity to the institution which i love and have many fond memories of. where even chinese class was fun. who would have thought! ๐Ÿ™‚

in uni, the only thing uniting my varied attire was the degree of crumpledness, except for the pretty clothes which i wear as a last resort when i have no other clothes to wear. and i remember sitting outside clementi Macs and having long discussions into the night about anything and everything, just because operated for 24 hours and my parents didn’t really bother what time i got home.

and now, on this leap day, i went there with R and my last order was a cap and a cone. cappuccino cuz i need to write my methodology chapter tonight, and the cone, just for ol’ times sake to pop the entire base into my mouth.

we’re both sentimental nuts la, that’s why we’re best friends. that’s why we were there, to recall memories before the bulldozers erased them from our landscape. that’s the changing landscapes of Singapore for you.

Episode 273: dorky redhill

(ok that i am blogging means i am not doing any work to battle with the T munster) mweeples.

so we watched what has got to be one of the more contradictory shows i’ve ever watched, endearing and heart-wrenching at the same time. the shorts, good grief, FBTs should be banned. guys in FBTs are sartorial disaster of the century. i thought seeing shiftyeyes wearing (or well, not that it can it really be consider wearing) was bad enough, but a show with multiple clips of guys wearing FBTs and running, good grief.

what made me really sad was the jennifer garner bit. i guess anal-retentive go-getters never gelled well with rockstar wannabes.ย  dear juno, in reply to your question, i think we’ll never be able to find true love. yeah. regards, fan-person.

oh the soundtrack is seriously pretty awesome stuff. mouldy peaches! *heart overflowing with muzak love*ย  and they had my favourite carpenters song, rock version. more squeelages!

Episode 271: sexy

never would i think one day this whole cultural geography and gender thing would extend to my favourite activity.

This article examines the way in which the spaces, practices and pleasures of reading books became inscribed within a heteronormative geographical imaginary in Britain after the end of the Second World War. The active state provision of cultural welfare positioned London’s public branch libraries as key loci of knowledge and information, with their own attendant logics of reading, spatiality and time. However the growing visibility of paperbacks across the city during the 1950s rendered these logics increasingly problematic, until the threatened Penguin publication of D. H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover finally pushed them into crisis. As seen from an analysis of the ensuing trial, the dominant understanding of the relationships between reading, knowledge and space was only preserved by reformulating them within a profoundly heteronormative geography. The second part of this article examines the extent to which the practices of queer men challenged this construction, in particular focusing on the defacement of public library books by Kenneth Halliwell and his lover, John (later ‘Joe’) Orton. It concludes by questioning the limits of Frank Mort’s recently proposed analytical framework for pursuing historical geographical research.

Episode 269: Your life story, in six words

so I was reading this, in the midst of transcribing (zorkzorkzork) for my T monster…

so for now….

only wrote in Times New Roman.

Episode 268: tender mercies

haiz. i am so sad. my friend/family friend/more specifically mummy’s friend who became our family friend who became my friend just had a thanksgiving service for her life at SBC. cuz she is leaving sg to return to jakarta because her brain tumour thing came back and the doctors say there is nothing they can do. i wonder how theology professors cope when they hear that there is nothing the doctor can do. and when you pray to God for mercy, what do you ask for? mercy to zap the cancer, mercy to stop the pain, mercy to take her home quickly?

i am glad that as a Christian I do not need to fear death, or the concept of life beyond death, because I know (and she definitely knows, since she TEACHES IT! :D) that the next life is even better, even more glorious than what we can even imagine. no pain, no sickness. but time is always short for people who do not know God, who do not have this hope that Christians have. A hope in the tender mercies of God, and a calm assurance that Jesus lives forever more.

Softly and tenderly Jesus is callingโ€”
    Calling for you and for me;
Patiently Jesus is waiting and watchingโ€”
Watching for you and for me!

      Come home! come home!
Ye who are weary, come home!
      Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling,
      Calling, O sinner, come home

Time is now fleeting, the moments are passingโ€”
      Passing from you and from me;
Shadows are gathering, death-beds are comingโ€”
Coming for you and for me!

Ok the last stanza seems a bit morbid to sing! But time is really of the essence, until we reach heaven, to spend a timeless eternity with God and family ๐Ÿ™‚

        Episode 267: how…cheesy! XD

        You are mozzarella!Aunt Mozzarella

You are a shiny, soft, round cheese. You are very imaginative and creative, but you don’t like to stand out. You don’t mind solitude at times and you love to do art.

somebody said i am shinyyyyyyyyyyyy! *squees*

i need a life. now. seriously.

Episode 266: it’s like raaaaaaain, on your wedding day

The thesis topic is on religion and the internet, two everyday common place things/processes/ARGH STOP MAKING ME DECONSTRUCT THESE WORDS LA TOOTS. and it is part of studies in the wider realm of cultural geography and social life.

writing this conceptual framework, has however, sadly removed any semblance of my social life. And in another spin of life’s jokes, an anagram of my name is bledee. license to curse. Oh Alanis, thou art tres perceptive. Life is ironic.

V and i engaged in some johnnydepping of our musical collection after eco class on thurs. despite each thinking that we’ve the most chapalang music tastes (ranging from outright trashy ABBA *blush* to feelgood Bette Midler to funneh sounding band names starting with the…like “chalets, hives, muses, concretes”) we actually have many genres in common, which is quite fantabulous methinks.

and so i now have a new favourite song, with all essential elements of easy but haunting melody, lyrics that somehow don’t make and yet make complete sense all at once, and cute emo adorkable guy. WOOT! but, why are all the good ones gay? life’s mysteries…

        playing with prodigal sons

takes a lot of sentimental valiums

can’t expect the world to be your raggedy andy

while running on empty, you little old doll with a frown
you got to keep in the game

        retaining mystique while facing forward

i suggest a reading of a lesson in tightropes
